In the final assessment of strip quality, perfect flatness is non-negotiable. Any residual shape defect—edge wave, center buckle, or quarter buckle—renders the material unfit for high-value applications in automotive, aerospace, and precision stamping. Metals-Tech’s Automatic Flatness Control (AFC) system is a sophisticated, closed-loop solution designed to measure, analyze, and eliminate shape imperfections in real-time, delivering flawlessly flat strip directly off the mill.
Our AFC system is centered on a high-resolution shapemeter roll installed at the mill exit, which measures the transverse distribution of strip tension—the direct indicator of flatness. This real-time shape profile is processed by our proprietary control algorithms, which dynamically calculate and execute the optimal adjustment of all available flatness actuators, such as Work Roll Bending, Intermediate Roll Shifting in 6-Hi/20-Hi mills and etc.. By deploying Metals-Tech’s AFC, producers eliminate costly post-rolling leveling operations for most products, drastically reduce shape-related scrap and customer claims, and guarantee the superior, shipment-ready flatness required to compete in the most demanding markets.
